Researchers studying the discovery said that teeth and bones of eight individuals reveal the existence of links between hominids who lived 3.5 million years ago and the first human ancestors. Tim White and his colleagues at the University of California at Berkeley, who unearthed the fossils in the Ethiopian region Asa Issie, describe their
finding in the journal Nature. They explain that the pieces are part of the species Australopithecus anamensis, a hominid ancestor. Individuals found help close the gap that existed so far between the first phase of pre-human species and the fossil hominid found in Ethiopia, known as the Lucy group.
